A 29 year old woman in a vegetative state gave birth to a son on December 29, 2018 in Phoenix, Arizona. The woman, who resides in a long-term care facility named Hacienda Healthcare, has been non-verbal and incapable of moving independently since she was 3 years old due to a near-drowning accident. Caregivers did not know she was pregnant until the day she gave birth.
Phoenix police have executed a search warrant to obtain DNA samples from staff members at the facility. The Arizona’s Department of Health Services and Department of Economic Security are cooperating with the investigation.
The attorney representing the woman’s family said in a statement that the baby “has been born into a loving family and will be well cared for.” The attorney also said “The family obviously is outraged, traumatized and in shock by the abuse and neglect of their daughter at Hacienda Healthcare.”
If you have family needing nursing home, assisted living, or long-term care, you will want to do everything in your power to choose a home where your loved one will be well cared for. Following are factors to consider when making that choice:
Make sure to take a critical eye to the community. Examine both the private rooms and common area rooms at the community. Meet some of the staff and residents. When it is time for someone to go into an assisted living it is never easy time. In fact, it is a difficult and stressful process. The more information you find out about the community, the more comfortable you will feel.
